REPRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

When a male axolotl is interested in mating with a female, he will nudge her rear end with his nose. If no aggression is displayed, the male will attempt to court the female through a mating dance. During the mating dance, the male drops a packet of sperm on the ground, The female then moves over the packet and collects it through her cloaca. Afterwards, the female will deposit her eggs on a plant or rock, where they will hatch 10 to 14 days later. After hatching, the axolotls sexually mature after about a year.

axolotl_stages.jpg

The development of an axolotl embryo can be divided into 40 stages. Through stages 1 through 11, the embryos are positioned with the nucleus at the top. At the beginning of stage 12, the embryo rotates so that its dorsal side is at the top and remains at this position until stage 19. At the end of stage 19, the embryo will start to lie on its side and will be completely on its side at stage 21 and will remain there until stage 39. At stage 40 the larva will be on its belly and will soon hatch.
