NUTRITION AND DIGESTION
The axolotl's diet includes mollusks, worms, insects, crustaceans, and even fish. It has poor vision so it relies on sensory organs in its gills and fins to hunt. When it locates its prey, it opens its mouth and sucks it in like a vacuum. It may also inhale gravel to assist in digestion.
As a tadpole, the axolotl has a coil-shaped digestive system that is able to break down algae. As it reaches adulthood, its digestive system changes into one that allows it to consume meat and insects.
